The Gamer's Torch
We have fond memories the "old-school" game shops of the sixties, the seventies, and early eighties. Once computer gaming came along, though, tabletop games were unfortunately relegated to the dusty aisles of hobby shops and comic book stores.
Nothing against computer games or comic books, but our concept has always been a small boutique selling the best of the current crop of games, as well as a sprinkling of the older games that still survive.
We feel a good gaming shop has several elements that sets it apart from the larger stores that may also carry games. First, it's important to cultivate the customers who "get it." Some people are gamers and some just aren't. We want active gamers as customers.
Secondly, the shop must be willing to cater to the so-called "long tail" market; to seek out and stock games that have niche appeal and are perhaps both a bit obscure as well as maybe a little quirky.
Next, a good shop needs space for folks to play the games sold there. About half of our floor space is set aside for in-store gaming. It's only fair. You can't tell if you'll like a game until you actually play it.
Finally, a game store needs knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and courteous employees. It would certainly be wrong to take a "hard sell" approach with the shop's customers.
The ultimate goal should be very simple: to facilitate groups of players having fun with the products the store sells.
George and Kathleen
Hello!
I'm George Andrews and my wife is Kathleen. Though we're originally from the Washington, DC area, we have lived in San Diego now for over a decade, most of that time here in Pacific Beach.
Our gaming history goes back quite a few years, although I'll admit that—at times—the responsibilities of family and career managed to get in the way. Life's like that.
As we move on and approach our retirement years, we have settled on this shop as being the best way for us to stay active, involved in a community, and socially in touch with people of all ages.
If you're in the San Diego area, we'd love for you to stop by in person. If not, we'd still love to meet you online in our forums.
